Hijo de Mattie Della y John Lewis Nelson, ambos afroamericanos. Su hermana Tika Evene nació en 1960. Su progenitor fue pianista y compositor y su madre cantante de jazz. Fue nombrado Prince, en honor al nombre artístico de su padre: Prince Rogers, que tuvo un grupo de jazz llamado Prince Rogers Trio.
Nació epiléptico y solía tener convulsiones cuando era joven. Prince escribió su primera canción, “Funk Machine”, en el piano de su padre cuando tenía siete años. Cuando tenía diez años de edad, sus padres se separaron y cambió constantemente de hogares, viviendo con su padre y a veces con su madre y padrastro.
Siendo casi un niño formó un grupo con tres amigos. Se hizo famoso durante los años ’80 siendo reconocido como un talentos y abordando todos los géneros y estilos.

Son of Mattie Della and John Lewis Nelson, both African-American. His sister Tika Evene was born in 1960. His father was a pianist and composer and his mother was a jazz singer. He was named Prince, after the stage name of his father: Prince Rogers, who had a jazz group called the Prince Rogers Trio.
He was born an epileptic and used to have seizures when he was young. Prince wrote his first song, “Funk Machine,” on his father’s piano when he was seven years old. When he was ten years old, his parents separated from him and he constantly changed homes, living with his father and sometimes with his mother and stepfather.
Being almost a child, he formed a group with three friends. He rose to fame during the ’80s being recognized as a talent and tackling all genres and styles.
In 1980 he recorded “Dirty Mind”, a funk record with catchy melodies. A year later “Controversy” came out, selling more than three million copies. In 1984 he made the soundtrack for the movie Purple Rain and it went on to sell more than 13 million copies worldwide and won the Oscar for best song and a Grammy award for the album, which included songs like “When Doves Cry” and “Let’s Go Crazy”, which became worldwide hits. His next work, “Around the World In A Day” (1985), sold two million. In 1986 he released “Parade” and in 1987 “Sign O’ the Times” appeared, which was followed by “Lovesexy”.
In 1989 he achieved another bestseller with the band’s single from the movie “Batman”. With “Graffiti Bridge” he suffers a commercial failure and in 1991 leading the band “The New Power Generation”, he achieved gold singles with “7”, “Cream” and “Get Off” from the album “Diamonds And Pearls”.

He became engaged to Susannah Melvoin in 1985, though he married his showgirl and dancer, Mayte Garcia, on February 14, 1996, Valentine’s Day. They had a son, Boy Gregory, on October 16, 1996, who was born with Pfeiffer syndrome and died a week later. After divorcing in 1999, in 2001, he married Manuela Testolini in a private ceremony. His wife filed for divorce in May 2006. He later had a relationship with Bria Valente in 2007.
He became a member of Jehovah’s Witnesses in 2001 influenced by his friend, musician Larry Graham. He sometimes knocks on doors to talk about his faith.
Prince died on April 21, 2016, at his Paesley Park ranch in Minneapolis, aged 57. On April 15, he was rushed to the hospital after his plane was forced to make an emergency landing in Moline, Illinois. Hours later, his representative noted that he had been battling a severe case of the flu.
