We are proud to announce that Carson Kemp, a 5th-grade student at Michelle Obama STEM, won first place at the K-5 Georgia State Science Fair held at Georgia College & State University in Milledgeville, GA.Carson's project, which investigated [Aerodynamics], stood out for its creativity and scientific rigor. "I learned so much about the scientific process," Carson said. "Winning this award means a lot to me."Carson's dedication and hard work have earned him this prestigious recognition. On September 23rd, 2023, Science ATL's prominent STEM education programs, the Chief Science Officers and the STEM Professional School Partnership, convened at the Michelle Obama STEM Elementary Academy. The day was filled with workshops, collaboration, and STEM innovations. The Chief Science Officer (CSO) program, tailored for students in grades 6-12, saw its training sessions led by five high school students recognized for their excellence and now part of the 2023-2024 Science ATL Leadership Council. They adeptly guided new CSOs through their roles and responsibilities, encouraging each to develop their own STEM-based initiative called an Action Plan. Students were also invited to engage with the Georgia Youth Sustainability Conference and connect with Get Hype INC, an organization empowering girls of color with tech skills. While students delved into CSO training, adults focused on the STEM Professional School Partnership (SPSP). This initiative, pairing STEM professionals with K-12 educators, aimed to enhance STEM accessibility in education. Partners brainstormed diverse ideas, spanning from establishing school gardens to creating collaborative class arcades using Arduino boards. The projects featured various topics, including nursing, air pollution, illegal dumping, clothing and textiles, herpetology, and more. “The creativity of these students serves as a testament to the commitment of Clayton County 4-H to nurture the future leaders of our community,” said 4H Youth Agent Aisha Favors “Thanks to the collaborative efforts of Clayton County 4-H, STEM Coordinator Antonio Ellis, and Principal Marcia Payton, this event was a resounding success, setting the stage for the upcoming District Project Achievement on Sat., March 23, 2024, at Mason Creek Middle School, where these students will continue to shine.” Clayton County 4-H is proud to support and foster the intellectual growth of these young talents, providing them with a platform to showcase their dedication to making a positive impact in our community. “The future looks bright as these students advance to the district level, and we are excited to see how they will continue to make a difference in the world through their innovative projects,” added County Extension Coordinator Rebecca Hardeman. “We extend our gratitude to all those who contributed to the success of this event, and we look forward to witnessing the continued achievements of our local youth in the field of STEM and beyond.” |
