UNDATED (AP) — Vanderbilt coach Mark Byington has landed a second portal transfer in as many days, this time forward Jaylen Carey following him from James Madison to his new job. Byington was hired by Vanderbilt after coaching James Madison to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. He added guard MJ Collins from Virginia Tech on Tuesday. Carey is a 6-foot-8 forward who played every game as a freshman for James Madison. That includes both NCAA Tournament games. Byington says he knows Carey can play in the Southeastern Conference as a physical presence who can play inside and also shoot 3s.

AMELIA ISLAND, Fla. (AP) — The College Football Playoff snub of unbeaten Florida State is still a fresh wound for the entire Atlantic Coast Conference. On the agenda this week at the Ritz Carlton on Amelia Island is how to avoid having something similar happen again in the now 12-team CFP, with the selection committee responsible for divvying up seven at-large teams to go with the five highest ranked conference champions. Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi spoke for much of the conference when he said he felt as if there has been a lot of disrespect to ACC football.

MERCED, Calif. (AP) — UCLA could pay the University of California at Berkeley $10 million a year for three years instead of six as a result of the Bruins’ upcoming move to the Big Ten and the demise of the Pac-12. The University of California Board of Regents special committee on athletics voted 7-1 during a meeting at UC Merced on Tuesday to cut down the length of the payments. UC president Michael Drake recommended six years in a report going into the meeting. The matter will come up again on Thursday for a vote by the full Board of Regents. If there is a significant change in revenues and/or expenses for either school, exceeding 10% over 2024-25 projections, UCLA’s contribution can be reevaluated by the regents.

LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) — North Carolina State, Baylor and Texas will be among the eight teams in the field for the 2025 Maui Invitational. The tournament field also will include Oregon, Seton Hall, Southern California, UNLV and host Chaminade. The tournament returns to the Lahaina Civic Center this November after being played in Honolulu last year following a series of fires that killed 101 people and decimated the town of Lahaina. The 2025 bracket will be played Nov. 24-26. N.C. State is coming off the program’s fourth trip to the Final Four following an unexpected run through the ACC Tournament. Baylor is one of four teams to win at least one game in the NCAA Tournament the last five years, including a run to the 2021 national championship.

UNDATED (AP) — One of the lead attorneys in a class-action antitrust lawsuit against the NCAA says settlement talks are progressing well. A deadline looms next week for the NCAA and major conferences to agree to a deal that could cost billions in damages and set up a groundbreaking revenue-sharing system with college athletes. Steve Berman, a Seattle-based attorney for the plaintiffs, would not confirm details of the possible agreement but told AP a settlement could create a new framework for paying college athletes that he believes could withstand other antitrust challenges.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Former Louisville place kicker John Wallace, whose school-record 66 career field goals included two in a 2013 Sugar Bowl upset of Florida, has died. He was 31. The school announced Wallace’s death on Wednesday in a release that did not specify a cause. Wallace helped the Cardinals reach four consecutive bowl games from 2012-15, highlighted by the 33-23 victory over the Gators in New Orleans. He made 10 of his first 11 attempts as a freshman, with the miss from 57 yards, and finished 16 of 21. His total that season included a 30-yarder in overtime to beat Cincinnati 34-31.

UNDATED (AP) — The spring transfer portal window is closed in college football and several teams made huge upgrades. Mississippi coach Lane Kiffin has built a contender for the first year of the 12-team College Football Playoff. Miami went hard to boost its chances in Year 3 under Mario Cristobal. Ohio State's portal class was high in quality. Oregon added another experienced quarterback. Kalen DeBoer's best pick up at Alabama might have been a lineman who came back. And at Colorado, Coach Deion Sanders is reloading again with a host of new arrivals.

UNDATED (AP) — Former Duke center Christian Reeves has signed to play at Clemson, one of the Blue Devils’ Atlantic Coast Conference rivals, while Washington landed one of the best remaining players available in forward Great Osobor. Osobor was the Mountain West Conference player of the year last season at Utah State and announced his intention to follow coach Danny Sprinkle after he was hired as the new coach at Washington. Reeves played in 13 games as a freshman and was expected to play a bigger role this past season. But Reeves injured his right ankle early in the year and needed surgery. He played in only three games.
