I so love making crochet cup cozies – they work up so quickly and are a great way to use up yarn scraps.

These Easter cup cozies are made with the front post double crochet color work technique which I have recently become very attached to! It all started with the Hearts in a Row Hat and then moved on to the popular Peek a Boo Bunny Hat.

I am currently working on a lamb hat version but knew it would also make an adorable cup cozy as well. I wanted to add a third Easter themed cup cozy and came up with a cute little hatching chick! I also made these graphs into sweet little mini Easter baskets which are also free patterns on the blog.

These free Easter crochet patterns would make great additions to craft fairs or add to Easter baskets for your older coffee loving kids!

These crochet cup cozies are the perfect “raid your scrap basket” project! I had a lot of left over scrap yarn in Paintbox Cotton Aran* from my Spring Rhapsody Blanket and the Winter’s Night Rhapsody Blanket. I always get so excited when I am able to use up bits and pieces of yarn I have on hand and it worked out perfectly for these cup cozy patterns!

I do recommend a cotton yarn for cup cozy patterns but that is not absolutely essential. If you are going to be using your cup cozy for iced drinks, cotton is more absorbent than acrylic and will “soak” up the condensation much better. Cotton is also preferred for heat resistance when using it for hot drinks.

These three Easter cup cozies are made with the FPdc (front post double crochet) color work technique. If you are new to this amazing crochet color work, I have a complete video tutorial that will walk you through reading a graph, working the FPdc stitch, carrying and changing yarn colors. Be warned – once you start you may not be able to stop! My mind is spinning with all the possibilities!

I do think an adventurous beginner could tackle these patterns because you are basically working double crochet stitches throughout. And since these are small they would be great practice for larger projects!

For the eyes you have several options. When I designed my Peek a Boo Bunny Hat I went on a search for dome buttons that have the look of plastic safety eyes without the shaft on the back which would be uncomfortable to wear. I found the perfect set of dome buttons to sew on my hat. The buttons came in a set with multiple sizes from quite small to large so you could certainly use those. However, since these cup cozies aren’t going to be worn you could certainly use safety eyes if you wish. They will kind of poke the cup but I don’t think that would create an issue. For the third (and least expensive option) you could also choose to embroider the eyes on your cup cozy.

  • G = green
  • GR = grey
  • PU = purple
  • Y = yellow
  • RS = right side
  • ch(s) = chain(s)
  • dc = double crochet
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • yo = yarn over
  • FPdc = front post double crochet (see special stitches section below)
  • Rnd(s) = round(s)

Special Stitches:

FPdc (front post double crochet stitch):Yo and insert your hook from front to back to front around the dc stitch post from the row below, yo, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yo, pull through 2 loops, yo, pull through remaining 2 loops.

Pattern Notes:

  • Three different graphs are provided – lamb, chick and bunny.
  • Worked from bottom up.
  • Graph is worked as FPdc around the stitch in the round directly below, with the exception of the first round which is a round of double crochet.
  • Each pixel of the graph corresponds to 1 FPdc (rounds 2 – 10) or dc (round 1) stitch.
  • Worked in the round without turning. Slip stitch join at the end of each round into the top of the first FPdc, not the beginning ch-2.
  • To work color changes, work last dc stitch before new color until there are two loops on the hook, pull in new color with last yo.
  • To reduce ends to weave in, I carried the non-working yarn as yarn “floats” on the wrong side of the hat.
  • Ch-2 at beginning of each round does not count as a stitch.
